Weigh-IN for WEEK 8

Hi Troops! We are FEW in number aren't we? Well, I need to continue on to the end of the contest so I don't blow up like the blueberry girl on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! Even If I'm not doing so well. I still like the incentive.

Karen 176 And still trying at least thinking about it!. Physical Therapy will help me! And I can walk much better now.

Christine 175.2 I was off track for a few days, but now I'm back on!

Bonnie

Meredith 160.2 1.2 lb loss, 6.2lb total loss I need to get my butt back in gear.

Eric (just in case you tune in)

MY MOM, Ruth Jensen (copy from my blog)

Since we just passed the anniversary of my Sweet Mom's death, I wanted to share these pictures of her. They are her Engagement with my Dad, and just her. I love them. Thanks Bonnie for sharing them with me! She is 22 in this photo. Dad is 26.

Round 3 Week 7

Bonnie- 215

Christine- 172.6 1.2 lb loss, total 8.6 loss

Karen - 175.5 No change. Ugh. I didn't even beat my own Challenge!!! Aaarggghhh! No exercising yet. But I will have physical therapy for the knee starting friday.

Meredith - 161.4

Deceptively Delicious

I bought Jessica Seinfeld's cookbook "Deceptively Delicious" (how to add vegetable purees into daily foods so kids won't know they are getting their veggies...of course if you kids already love veggies then you add them in as a bonus. Maybe your husbands need it more than your kids. My Bishop doesn't like vegetables so I'm going to make him some brownies with vegetable puree and not tell him to see how it works). It's actually quite fascinating! She has a great way with her kids and tons of fabulous ideas for helping them enjoy eating healthily. (The book was on sale for 40% off at Borders last week).

I have gotten quite excited about learning how to substitute things in recipes to make them more healthy. I was making banana bread the other day and was out of shortening, milk, and eggs and it turned out to be the best bread ever!!! So I thought I'd share some easy substitutions and eliminations that can be made when baking. These ideas didn't come from the book. I found them online. Just type "healthy food substitutions" into Google.

1. Reduce sugar by 25%. You probably won't even notice it's gone! Example, for 1 cup, you only use 3/4 cup. If you're making a yeast recipe, don't omit all sugar because the yeast needs it.

2. Instead of 1 whole egg, use 2 egg whites. Each egg has 5 grams of fat so you can see how easily this adds up!

3. Reduce shortening or butter by 25%. Instead of shortening, use applesauce and/or canola oil. If you use applesauce then the baking time may need to be reduced by 25% too.

4. Instead of milk, use soy milk. I will not drink soy milk, but in baking you can't even tell a difference and soy is better for you. I have also learned to love fat free milk.

5. Mix whole wheat flour with the white flour in recipes. Usually about 1:1 ratio, with a scant less whole wheat flour. When possible, don't even eat enriched flour. Whole grains are what we need. Orrowheat makes a great 100% whole wheat bread. Christine/Cereal Lover-have you tried Whole Grain Cheerios? They are so yummy and are made with a hint of sugar so you don't have to add any. I love them and they're so much better than regular:-)

On a side note, I learned that we shouldn't boil vegetables because it takes out the good stuff. Steam, microwave, grill, etc. are much better options. Frozen veggies are great. Canned veggies not so great.

Happy Tuesday:-)

My strategy

My current diet plan is working really really well, so I thought I'd share it!

I have 2 simple rules:

1. 2 servings of carbs per day

2. no treats

And one fabulous reward:

If I follow my rules perfectly for a week, I get a nice big dessert.

Ta-dah! That's all!
The reason this works is that carbs and treats are my only enemies. If I'm going to over-snack on anything, it'll be a carb or something sweet. Everything else is not only easy for me to eat in moderation, it's hard to get myself to eat it. I could eat tons of meat, nuts, fruit and veggies on this plan and probably still lose just as much, but I just don't. Even if I'm hungry, I'll usually just let my stomach growl instead of finding protein or produce to fill it up. But the good thing is that my diet does make me eat quite a bit of the good stuff. Much more than I would if I was eating more carbs.

Oh and I do exercise. I'm trying to do at least 40 minutes a day.

So this is what I eat on an average day:

Breakfast: banana, 2 eggs with mozzerella, orange juice

Snack: fruit or string cheese or almonds

Lunch: lean cuisine panini (carb #1)

Snack: carrots and peanut butter and maybe a bunch of grapes

Snack: big bowl of cereal (carb #2)

Dinner: meat & veggies, or a salad, or a smoothie, or slim-fast with whey powder

***oh, I forgot to mention, I DO actually get a treat every day. I have one of those Hershey's sticks! They are really good, only 60 calories, and I totally feel like I'm having a little candy bar when I eat them!

Bottom line, I've learned that the way to lose weight is to learn a lot about it, find out what actually works, then figure out what can work for you. I made sure my plan included the things I really love (cereal!) but at the same time provided a way to keep me from eating too much of them.

The end!

Round 3 Week 6

Sorry I don't want to copy and paste, but here's a weigh-in post!

From Bonnie: I have some suggestions for upcoming challenges. 1. No refined sugar (fresh fruits are okay sugar). 2. Increase vegetable intake. 3. Get rid of one personal vice for the week.

Bonnie- 215 no loss but still losing overall. So far, 8 lbs from my heaviest. I walk and stretch each morning for 45 minutes (1 1/2 miles). I walk with a brain tumor survivor and prego so they are my excuse for not doing more (but brain tumor's recovery is still going well and she's walking with us again:-) The doc gave her a clean bill of health to be fully active.) I have a hard time with the Tuesday start so I'm usually reporting a different times. I finished my Apple Jacks and Grasshopper cookies so I'm ready for the no sugar and get rid of a personal vice (sugar). Go team!

Christine- 173.8 3.2 lb loss (!!!) total 7.4 lb loss I probably did about 200 minutes of exercise.

Karen - 175.5 Hey! Christine you have really passed me! that is awesome!! Yea for you!!!! I should be doing situps and my weight lifting since I can't do walking stuff but I'm busy trying to keep up the invalid thing for another day or two.....
So where are Eric and Mer and why didn't you people weigh in last week? That's when I posted the challenge. BUT I admire you two for accepting! Attack on the pounds!!!!!!!!

Meredith - 161.4 2 lb loss 5lb total loss 150 minutes exercise I'm seriously not that into this. Though Eric and I said we'd try. I have no motivation. Although, it's cooler now...and we're walking more. So that's something.

Round 3 Week 5

OK ladies and gentleman, I see no one has signed in at all! Where are you???
Last week's challenge was to stretch for 5 - 10 minutes each morning. Did anyone do it? I did! I hope you all are gaining a new desire to get back to the great work. We are in a bit of a slump aren't we? But we ONLY have 2 more birthdays to go! Mine is in 2 1/2 weeks (I simply MUST lose 4 by then!) and then Mer's will be 5 weeks later. So let's get off our DUFFS and get crackin'!!! AND losing! THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE IS TO DRINK 2 LITERS WATER EACH DAY . Here are you stats:

Jana 131

Meredith 163.4

Eric 218

Christine 177 1 lb loss, total 4.1 lb loss I'm not really keeping track of anything anymore, but I know I did at least 150 minutes of exercise. I forgot to check and see what the new challenge was so I didn't do it, but I did do my personal goal of running 20 minutes every morning. I even broke my record and ran for a whole 35 minutes one day!

Karen 174.5 Yeaa! back down on my way to 170 by my birthday!!! 30 minutes exercise (wahoo...) And I did the stretch challenge most days. Come on people! don't poop out on me now!!!!!

Round 3 Week 4 Weigh-In!

Alright! This week's challenge was to try and new kind of exercise. So far we have no group challenge for this week, so if you all don't mind, I'll come up with it. And it will be: (Every morning when you wake up, do 5 - 10 minutes of STRETCHING every which-a-way) . Also, let us know how you did on your personal challenge for this last week. And then tell us your personal challenge for this week!

Jana: 131 = 2.5 lb gain

Meredith: 163.4 2 lb gain 3.0lb total loss 70 minutes exercise I actually did this week's group challenge! I ran outside! Of course I've done it before....a super long time ago, but I'm counting it as a new exercise because it's definitely out of my norm. And get this, I ran an entire mile without stopping! I suppose my personal challenge for this week will be to drink at least 2 L/day of water; I've been a bad bad water drinker lately.

Eric: 218 4lb loss 5lb total loss

Christine: 178.2 1.4 lb gain, total 2.6 lb loss Mer I did the same thing as you! I ran outside. I really loved it, it's so much easier to do speed intervals that way instead of on the treadmill. My personal challenge is to run every morning this week.

Karen: 176.5 mmmm back up a bit. rats. About 90 min exercise. It's hard without walking or stationery biking..... I blew the challenges. sorry. My Personal challenge is to eat right. starting tomorrow,.

Bonnie: 213 1.5 lb gain. I have no idea how I could possible have gained! I'm sure it wasn't the 2 Big Stick popsicles I had each day (23 grams of sugar each) or the lemon bars that were leftover from a dinner party I hosted. Shoving 3 in my mouth at 12:30 am wouldn't make me gain weight, right? Bonnie, of course that wouldn't make you gain! I'm on your side! And neither will the king size hershey bar w/almonds that my co-worker MADE me eat today!

INJURY!!
Yup. I am officially injured. My knee decided it didn't want to walk anymore so it gave me great pain whenever I tried, starting last Thursday around noon. I had to hop around the classroom and then I could barely make it to the car after work. I had to lean on each of the cars I passed as I hobbled to mine. I got crutches from my friend, Susan Ellsworth who just had Knee surgery (which I will probably have...) about 6 weeks ago. I went to a doc on Friday and she said I should rest my knee and put ice on it and take ibuprophen. Huh. I was already doing that!! Saturday morning it felt a little better. I can put a little weight on it but it is so fragile that I twist it verrry easily. OOoouuuch!!! Don bought me a wonderful knee brace that helps tremendously. I will be doing my weights at home for a while. I'm so sad to not be able to take walks around the neighborhood. I love doing that. I guess you all will have to pump up your exercises to make up for my lost average of 250 minutes a week. Heh heh, have fun!!!
Poor Me.

Smiling Happy People Dancing

I meant to put this on my blog, which I will now, but I'll leave it here too. It's the one mom emailed us.
Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Round 3 Week 3 Weigh-In!

Alright! This week's challenge was 5 servings of fruits/veggies per day. So far we have no group challenge for this week, so if you all don't mind, I'll come up with it. And it will be: (someone else please come up with a challenge!) . Also, let us know how you did on your personal challenge for this last week. And then tell us your personal challenge for this week!

Group challenge: (by christine) try a new kind of exercise this week, or at least something you haven't done in a long time.

Jana: 131 = 2.5 lb gain 50 min exercise. I didn't do the group challenge or my personal challenge. I'm with you Mer, not really into it. I'm totally yoyo-ing! And it's too hot to exercise!! I like the group challenge...I'll have to think of a good one for that. I'll try to exercise 4 times this week.

Meredith: 161.4 1.6lb loss 5.0lb total loss 75 minutes exercise I did not eat that many fruits or vegetables. I'm telling you guys, I'm not in it this time. I honestly don't even care anymore. I'm stuck, I'm tired, and I don't have any supports at home. Eric's too busy and stressed with work, and I really need him to be on board with me this time around. Excuses excuses, you might think. And I think it, too. But it totally takes conscious effort and thought to lose weight and neither Eric or I have that right now. It's kind of on the back burner. But I suppose I will make a personal challenge, and I suppose it will be to go anorexic for the week. Ha. I wish. I'll try and do 90 minutes of exercise; it's a small goal, so maybe I'll reach it.

Eric: 218 4lb loss 5lb total loss

Christine: 176.8 1.8 lb gain total 4.4 lb loss I didn't really keep track of anything. I had a vacation week, this week I'm back in it though! Meredith I completely know what you mean! I can't lose any real weight unless it is the main focus of my life. Any time life gets in the way too much, I just try to keep up my gerneral good habits-- exercise at least some every day, still eat healthy if not perfect-- and tell myself that as long as I'm not gaining I'm doing good. Then when I'm ready to get going again, I do. Personal challenge this week-- lose more than 2 lbs.

Karen: 175.5 Total .5 loss YESSS I rock!! Ugh. I agree with the rest of you. this is HARD!!! BUT If I wasn't trying to do it I'm afraid I would be really gaining now. I really appreciate all of you still sticking with it with me. I KNOW how important it is to really get you head and heart into the program to really make those pounds dissapear. And I find it hard to remember how I did that! I think Christine's challenge is a good one. maybe I'll try the eliptical again. I just don't like it. I feel the great need to straighten my knees!! 275 mins exercise and my knee is complaining. I ate more than normal Fruits and veggies but not near the 5 per day. I'm going to keep working on that and also the no eating after 7 p.m. and no bad snacking, which was my challenge last week. I was just ok at that.
GO US !!! RAH! RAH! RAH!!! WE CAN DO IT ! WE CAN DO IT! WE CAN DO IT, WE CAN!!!
Let's give ourselves an out loud pep talk every morning in the mirror this week! We will be OLYMPIANS!!!!!!!!!
Bonnie: 211.5 1 lb loss.

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Meredith

Here is a little incentive for you.
I'll bet you could look like this
by your birthday!!!!! Go for it!
Rah! Rah! Rah!!!!!

We love you !!!!!!!!

Round 3....Week 2 Weigh-In

Alright! This week's challenge was NO EATING AFTER 7pm. So far we have no group challenge for this week, so if you all don't mind, I'll come up with it. And it will be: 5 servings of fruits/veggies per day. Also, let us know how you did on your personal challenge for this last week. And then tell us your personal challenge for this week!

Jana: 128.5 = 1.5 lb loss (My weigh-in last week was wrong so I fixed it). 180 min exercise. I did 5 days out of 7 on the group challenge. I exceeded my personal challenge by exercising 6 times, instead of 5. I'm actually pretty proud of how I've been doing with eating--I haven't been all gung ho on the South Beach diet, but I cut out most of the treats and it's helped a lot, and that exercise thing was hard to start again but I did it! Maybe my more moderate form of weight loss will be easier to stick to. My personal challenge for this week is the same as last week: exercise 5 times.

Meredith: 163.0 0lb gain/loss 3.4lb total loss 150 minutes exercise I ate after 7 on a couple of occasions. My personal goal was to lose more weight, which I did not do. But I did drink all of the water that I said I was going to. My personal challenge for this week is to try and get motivated again. I'm really not feeling it....So I think I'll try to lose 2 lbs.

Eric: 218 4lb loss 5lb total loss 45 minutes exercise I ate after 7. I did not go to rugby but I did drink all of the water. My personal challenge for this week is to not drink any regular soda. Great job on the loss!!! from Mom

Christine: 175 2 lb loss, 6.2 total loss 270 minutes exercise ate after 7 once. My personal goal was to follow my strict diet plan perfectly, and I almost almost did it. I was soooooo good! But my exercise is slacking, so My personl challenge this week is to exercise twice a day every day but sunday.

Karen: 178 3 lb gain. UGH. 240 exercise mins. Did not eat after 7, 5 days. My personal goal was to keep track of my food intake. I did a very good job on it until the last day anda half. The paper got hidden on the counter so I forgot. But it didn't help me eat better like I assumed it would. rats. This week my personal challenge will be.... No "snack" foods. (jr. mints, chocolate popcorn, cereal, ice cream, kisses {hersheys}etc.).

Bonnie: 211.5 1 lb loss. no exercise:-) Ate after 7. I really didn't have a personal goal except to keep doing this losing thing. I wasn't planning to work this week and thought I'd be exercising every day but I did end up working. I took my exercise clothes with me but was so tired from standing all day that I just lay in bed each night. So I guess my new challenge for this week is to exercise no matter how tired I am. I did eat better and less so that's why I lost a little.

Saturday, August 9, 2008

How much water?

I posted an interesting article at the bottom on the blog. I've been hearing rumblings about this for awhile now and decided to see what it was all about. I naturally drink a lot of water without even trying but I thought those who don't would be interested in this so they don't have to feel bad. And, maybe when we drink too much we are hampering our weight loss! No one wants that. Moderation in all things. Smiles!

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Round 3 Week 1 Weigh-In!

Alright! This week's challenge was NO CHOCOLATE. So far we have no group challenge for this week, so if you all don't mind, I'll come up with it. And it will be: NO EATING AFTER 7pm! Also, let us know how you did on your personal challenge for this last week. And then tell us your personal challenge for this week!

Jana: 130 2.5 lb loss 180 minutes of exercise. Ate some good chocolate. I reached my weight loss goal but not my exercise goal b/c I didn't exercise after I got home from camp. I guess my personal challenge should be to exercise...five times this week, and lose a pound.

Meredith: 163.0 3.4lb loss. 215 minutes of exercise. I didn't eat one bit of chocolate. And I don't care what event there was, if you ate chocolate, you lost! :) As far as my personal goals, I did reach my weight loss goal, and actually surpassed it! When it came to my South Beach eating, I followed it 5 out of 7 days. I wish I would have done better. My personal goal for this week is to lose another 1.5 pounds and to drink at least 2 liters/day of water.

Eric: 222 1lb loss 75 minutes of exercise. Ate chocolate. Did not meet personal challenge of going to rugby; had to go to Omaha for three days for work. Personal challenge for this week is to, again, go to rugby and I'm going to do the water thing with Mer.

Christine: 177 4.2 lb loss 305 minutes of exercise I did eat chocolate since that's what I'd planned for josh's baptism, but I'm still so glad we did that challenge! We totally would have gone out for dessert the other day, but I couldn't think of anything good without chocolate so we just didn't go! Personal goals-- I did really good, but when I made my goals I totally forgot we'd have company for half the week! My goal was 5 servings of produce every day, and I did it 4 of the days. Exercise goal was 360, I did 305. Personal challenge: Okay. I've decided I HAVE to get to my wedding weight by my birthday! So that's still 7 more pounds in 21 days. I've written down a diet plan and my goal is to stick to it to the LETTER every day this week. heehee, i'm so verbose today!

Karen: 175 3 lb loss! About 345 exercise or more. I really need to write it down daily. I did eat chocolate BUT I ate FAR LESS than I would have. At Christine's for Josh's baptism, jessica told us "just don't count it!" when we wanted to eat the brownie and ice cream refreshments. So we didn't. But I did still eat. As I bragged already, I met my challenge of running for 5 minutes. I plan to try to do it more. My Personal Challenge will be to write down everything I eat this week. It will be very difficult and will be a miracle if I actually remember to do it but I will try. I may suggest this as a group challenge later. My weight goal will be 2 lbs again. Hmmm, I have 2 after 7pm eating events this week.....

Bonnie: 212.5 2.5 lb loss. About 100 exercise minutes. So, I have to get used to paying close attention to all these details and reporting to you losers. When I'm away for the week training I never know if I'll have internet access or not and if I'll have a scale. Whine, whine. I didn't read about the "no chocolate" challenge and totally blew it. I just read the new challenge and will be very good about it for the next 3 days...I was actually out of commission last week. I had a corneal erosion and had to come home on Wednesday (missing my last 3 days of $) and when my eye felt better my antibiotics made me throw up for a day. Thus, I must attribute my weight loss to that. 50 minutes is also a big step for me but I am up for the challenge! I gave away my training this coming week because I've been so sick and was nervous about being in the dry, dry desert since my "unorganized cornea" was giving me problems. After reading that Nerak ran for 5 minutes I ran for 1 minute. I must top her! (no, I already "top" her but I mean top her minutes, silly). I like using different colors:-) My goal this week will be to exercise 5 days, no chocolate, no eating after 7 pm, run for 1.5 minutes (I hate running, by the way), and do the new challenge as well! Go me!

Friday, August 1, 2008

Wahoo!!!
I accomplished my personal CHALLENGE this morning! I ran for 5 continuous minutes on the treadmill. + an extra 15 seconds. And I didn't die. That's the greatest part! Yea Me!

Round 3 First Weigh-In

Alright! Here goes! Post your weight, and your individual goals. This week's group challenge is NO CHOCOLATE!

Jana: 132.5 Weekly Weight Goal: Lose 1 pound. Exercise Goal: 200 minutes. Eating: Normally I'll be doing South Beach but probably not this week.

Meredith: 166.4 (vacation ruined me!) My personal goal/challenge for the week is to stay on South Beach and to lose 1.5 to 2lbs. Jana...I modified the post...sorry. I suppose I volunteer to be the blog posting person or whatever.

Eric: 223 He hasn't come up with a personal goal, so I will make it for him....to go to rugby this week.

Karen: 178 (the summer ruined me!) Challenge: I will run for 5 minutes on the treadmill at least once this week. I will lose 2 lbs. I will be doing my Low sugar & carb, high protien plan like last time, and taking the Pine oil capsules that Christines says help her lose.

Christine: 181.2 This week's goal: eat at LEAST 5 servings of fruits and veggies every single day. Exercise 360 minuts. (christine can you design another page for us to print and keep track of our stuff? i really used that a lot and need one for this time around. you're such a good daughter!) Yes I can design another one, what should I put on it? Like the other one...daily excercise, the weekly challenge and weight, and our own challenge.

Bonnie:Sugar said...
Big dork here. I can't figure out how to edit this post so I can add in my goals (albeit almost a week late!).I'm staying in hotels for the next 2 weeks and was in one last week. My food is basically provided for me. I didn't check this blog until today so I will do the no chocolate this week in addition to the new challenge.I DID exercise 3 times in the hotel fitness center!!! I'm not up to 50 minutes but I could probably get there this week. Oh, and I can't count on the scales at these hotels (the last one said I weighed 230!!) So, for now my weigh in will have to be on Sundays. But I know that doesn't matter to anyone and you're wondering why I'm telling you so much:-)I have an old picture of me when I wanted to lose weight (beware...it's scary) that I'll post when I find it.Current weight 215Goal weight 14075 lbs!!!!And my other goal is to fit into the fitted Hawaiian mu`u mu`u temple dress that I had made in 1995. On a side note, a 34 B would be lovely but I'll settle for a C.I bought a pedometer so 10,000 steps a day is my daily goal as well-beginning next week when it arrives.Smiles, Fave

Too many rules?

I was just looking at the things I put as possible rules and am wondering if it is too many things for us to post. Do you want to post the individual goals? Challenges for yourself? And does someone want to volunteer to be the .....webmaster or whatever you are who figures it all out like Christine did? (Christine?) I am not quite smart enough on the McPuter to do it.

IF we are posting our own goals, then my first one is:

Challenge: I will run for 5 minutes on the treadmill at least once this week.
I will lose 2 lbs.
I will be doing my Low sugar & carb, high protien plan like last time, and taking the Pine oil capsules that Christines says help her lose.
And that's my stuff.

Saturday, July 26, 2008

No Chocolate!!!!!
I guess I did say first come.... so The first challenge next week is no chocolate.
And I was just trying to figure out how many minutes we should get in each week so I am fine with the 250 minutes however we can get them in.

Friday, July 25, 2008

OK! I have tried twice to post this as a comment and I keep boo-booing on Bonnie's Mac so now I will attempt my own Post.

How about 1.5 lbs per person per week for the next 4 weeks (till Christine's b-day). And 50 min. minimum exercise 5 days per week. This adds up to 42 lbs and (get this!) 7000 minutes of exercise. We still report lbs lost and minutes each week. Who would like to issue the first challenge to us all? First Come first served .
Any changes ?

Let's Get This Party STARTED!

Alright people, when are we doing this??? I was thinking of starting next Tuesday, with Karen being out of town and all. What do you think???

I like the weigh-ins on Tuesday, because that seems to be the best day for me weight-wise! It's just enough time for me to recover from the weekends...

Monday, July 21, 2008

Me too

OK, I need to get in on this. My goal won't be to lose weight, but I need to start exercising again and go back on some semblance of the South Beach Diet even though I REALLY don't want to! I think my mysterious energy deficiency and nausea may be coming from my eating habits :::sigh::: so I need to try to fix that.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

Our Idea

Eric and Mer here...

We don't think that there should be a cash prize at the end.

We think that this round shouldn't be about competing, but rather working towards a goal together as a team. Meaning we all win, or we all lose.

We can have some sort of group reward at the end if we meet the goal, and if we don't, maybe some sort of consequence. But either way, it would be small and not a big deal.

We've discussed this with Mom and she agrees with us and likes our ideas.

The New Biggest Losers 3

The time has come for us to start a new Biggest Loser contest! We are excited to begin again because we NEED to begin again! We still have flab we want to say good-bye to and muscles we want to build up and show off! We all should say (as Dad/Don does every time he lifts weights :) " I AM STWONG!!" OK, this just HAS to be our new motto ! I have talked to Meredith & Eric & Christine and these are the ideas we have come up with so far. Please let us know what you think in a new post!

1. Weekly weigh-in and minutes exercised
2. We will set group goals of pounds to lose to achieve by 3 birthdays: First Christine's, August 26, then Mom's, September 18, and Mer's, October 24th which will be the ending date of the contest. For instance, If there are 6 people, we decide we want to lose 15 lbs by the 26th. That's 2 each and a few more we hope some of us will achieve.
3. We will each post our own Weekly Goal . i.e. the first week my goal is to lose 2 lbs and exercise for 300 minutes. Posting it for all of us to see should make us more determined to achieve our goal! AND our own personal challenge, like... One time this week I will run for 10 minutes (that would be 3 times longer than I have done this). So whatever YOU choose.
4. We will each post our diet plans at the begining. It is important to know what you will eat because we have discovered it really doesn't work to say "I'll eat more healthy" or something generic like this. You need a real plan like "low carbs" or "Low fat" or "South Beach" or "High Protien" . However you want to do it.
5.We will have Weekly CHallenges which we will take turns choosing. (most water, no sugar, most minutes exercising etc.)
4. AND WE WANT MONEY AT THE END! How about we charge $20 per person again and Dad and I will put in $100. We could say Winner take all OR have a first and second place OR wait and see if our totals are so close that we need to divvy it up between the Biggest Losers.

I will handle the money and will want it sent in soon. We hope to start this week so chime in with your opinions quickly!

Let's make this work and start getting STWONG!

New Challenge Suggestions?

I think Meredith's idea of No Sugar as in No treats or added sugar to replace No Chocolate is excellent. I know I am needing it now! And I want to OPEN THE FLOOR for suggestions for some NEW CHALLENGES if you have a good idea and would like to change any others in these last few weeks. Or is there one challenge we would really like to take on again instead of what is listed?

Mix it up?

OK, so I was just thinking about the challenges and how since we're starting to repeat some of them, I thought it might be fun to mix it up a little bit. So there were a couple of things I wanted to put out there....

1. For the "no chocolate"....can we switch that to "no sugar"? I think it would be a lot more difficult, and it's definitely something that I wanted to try and do. It would include chocolate, candy, cookies, cake, ice cream....any dessert with sugar, whether it had chocolate or not.

2. When I was telling the girls at work about our challenges and about the water one as an example, they reminded me that someone here in KC just died from drinking too much water (on a dare) and it kind of weirded me out a little bit. I drank a ton of water that week, and I just don't want anyone, including myself, to go overboard and get sick. So I was thinking of making it a goal, like "7 gallons of water" instead of "the most".

What do you think?

Kendrick Peak Hike

I'm the skinny one on the left in case you don't recognize me......
On Saturday Dad and I hiked up Kendrick peak. It was a 2,000 foot, 4 mile climb. I didn't even consider goiing with dad and the friends until the night before when he said the Fox family was going and maybe I should try it since we want to do some big hikes in the future months. So I finally thought, Well, I have been exercising hard for 5 months, gained lots of muscle and lost more than 40 lbs, I SHOULD be able to DO IT! So I said Yes. But we took our own car just in case I was going to die anyway and then we could turn around and come down. But I didn't die! It wasn't any harder for me than most of the others! I am really proud of this accomplishment and I deserve a trophy for it. I just may go get myself one... The view from the Ranger station on top was SO AWESOME! You can see all the way around for miles and miles. Such a beautiful sight! It was well worth the effort. Here we are with our fellow hikers in front of the old ranger cabin from about 90 years ago. The new one is 400 ft higher straight up the mt. And we went up there!

Week 9 Weigh-In!!!!

This past week's challenge was to get the most miles. Post that in BLUE.

Christine - 184.8 2.4 loss, total 9 lb loss 720 minutes of exercise 40.83 miles Mer- I granted you admin privileges, so you should be good to go. I've written down everything every week, so no problems there. Your points last week were 184 exercise, 294 weight loss, total 478.

Annette - 123.4 2.2 Lb gain, Total 2 lb gain. 100 minutes excercise. 4.2 Miles

Jana-124.5 4 lb loss, (yeah right my scale must be on crack) total 2.5 lb loss? 60 min exercise, didn't do the challenge

Dad - 154 again. 605 min exercise. Undisclosed miles (but probably not more than 40!)

Mom - 176 1 lb loss total 10. 620 exercise 24.5 miles

Jason - 189.2 1 lb loss 365 minutes of exercise 16.1 miles

Meredith - 161.4 9.8lb total loss 250 minutes exercise 6 miles Christine, let me know if you need my other minutes of exercise, because I have them written down on that chart you made. I don't remember all of my weights from every week, but I do know my starting weight was 171.2. Also, I want to put my picture back up on there, but it looks like I don't have "enough" permission on this blog to do so.

Veggies are fun!!

This is Jason:
Christine said you guys wanted to know about how I ate 30 servings of veggies a day.

Here is a basic rundown:

I ate fruit for breakfast and then after my exercise. (fructose does not spike your insulin levels the same as sugar)
Eating fruit just before exercise in the morning gives you quick energy for your workout. Also, the 30 minute window immediately following exercise is critical for muscle recovery. If you consume glucose (preferably fructose) during that 30 mins after you exercise, your muscles will recover quicker and will not be as fatigued. As an added bonus, the calories consumed (within reason) during this 30 minute window after exercise are used instantly by the body to rebuild muscle so they won't go to fat.

So, breakfast was usually a banana, strawberries, and almonds (unsalted, these provide protein and mono unsaturated fats or mufas, these fats are proven to be healthy and actually help with weight loss! Mufa's are found in nuts, avocados, olive oil, and some dark chocolate)

After exercise I had 2 oranges (for muscle recovery and they quench my thirst better than water or Gatorade). Then a sliced apple with all natural peanut butter (more protein and mufa fats).

I usually had one more serving of fruit in the morning, either peach, apricots, watermelon, or grapes.

So I averaged 6 servings of fresh fruits.
--------------
Then I would get out the baggies and prepare for the day. I put 4 servings of baby carrots in a bag, 4 servings of cucumbers, 4 servings of bean sprouts, 4 servings of celery sticks (usually with a thin layer of natural peanut butter for protein and mufas fats), then a bag with 2 servings of organic grape tomatoes and 2 servings of fresh sweet pea pods.

This gave me 20 servings of snacks that I carried with me everywhere in a bag. Watching TV, at my desk, driving in the car; I always had it with me and slowly munched the day away.

I had no idea how much water is in fruits and vegetables, I drank very little water all week and had to go potty all the time!

For lunch I had a wrap, one of these three:
1. Whole grain wheat tortilla, sometimes I would put on Dijon mustard, turkey, avocado slices(healthy mufa fat), grape tomatoes (halved), fresh spinach. This can be good with some Swiss cheese or red peppers for variety. Roll it up, yum!

2. Whole grain wheat tortilla, one can drained tuna (put the tuna down the middle of the tortilla, drizzle on one cap full of lemon juice and sprinkle with pepper if desired). Cut a dozen grape or cherry tomatoes in half and put them on, sprinkle with low fat mozzarella cheese, Nuke it for 35 seconds, roll up, super yum!! I like it even better with diced celery also, but I am to lazy to cut it up sometimes.

3. No carb option: Thick slice of turkey, lay on: thin slices of avocado (healthy mufas fat), tomatoes, and fresh spinach. Roll it up, yum!
--------------
Dinner: One night we had grilled chicken breast and corn on the cob, one night was a salad, sometimes I skipped dinner and just finished off all my veggie baggies. Several times I had a big bowl (4 cups) of steamed broccoli and cauliflower sprinkled with low fat mozzarella cheese.
-------------
When I started getting bored of veggies, I would add some green olives to the mix, this gave me some zesty flavor between bites as well as some more mufa fats.

I found that I really like fresh bean sprouts! They are fun to munch on and help satisfy my craving to munch on something late at night when watching TV. They are super healthy and almost zero calories!

Anyway, I had fun with this diet for a week. Eating so many veggies got me over the "its too much work to chop up veggies" attitude. Now it is second nature and I am eating them more than normal this week, not crazy, just a healthy 8-10 servings a day.

That is the cool thing about these weekly challenges, each one has really helped me shape new healthy habits. After the challenge was over, I didn't keep up the same volume, but I increased from what I was doing before.

The water challenge got me in the mode of drinking water all the time, now I drink more every day then I have in the past.

The TV challenge reminded me that there is life without TV, I have been reading more since then and I am really taking the time to turn off the TV early so I can read my scriptures for a full 30 mins.

The steps challenge got me up and moving, it helped me realize that each step counts. Parking at the far end of the parking lot, walking to the bathroom on the far side of the house, pacing my office while thinking; every little bit helps. I am still trying to move more, even if it is just something stupid like standing up while watching TV. Be active.

No eating after 7 really helped me break my habit of late night snacking. We all know that eating after 7pm, almost all the calories are stored as fat. Except for sprouts, I have been very diligent at not eating at night. If you are going to cheat and eat something bad, do it in the morning or just after you exercise and it won't do as much damage, Eating at night = weight gain.

The no chocolate was easy for me as I have been dieting for almost 1.5 years now and I am in healthy mode.

I haven't been able to lose weight for the last 6 months, I even tried Atkins phase 1, I didn't lose a pound. It is frustrating. I am gaining muscle mass as I lift weights, but I can't seem to get my body fat to decrease even 1 more %. Oh well, for now I am just trying to get stronger and healthier.

I won't win the most exercising minutes challenge, that's for sure. I just got the Epstein Barr Virus and that is kicking my rear, it is terrible. The only exercise I have been able to do for 2 weeks is slow walking and that takes every ounce of energy and motivation to do. I am really having a hard time dealing with this right now. Life happens, we just keep going.

Anyway, I knew going into this contest I wouldn't win, I just had no idea that I would get so much out of it! Thanks again everyone for putting it together and participating!! You guys (girls) are a great family and I love you all.

Bike Miles

If you are hauling little people behind you that will be worth 1 mile for every 2 that you bike. If you are on a stationery machine it is still 1 for 3.
From Da Judge.

Petition to the Powers that Be

So, I was wondering if instead of me counting a mile for every 3 miles of bike riding, could I could a mile for every 2? Because whenever I ride my bike, I am also hauling 50 pounds of little girl behind me. Not that I would have a chance of winning either way but I was just wondering what ya'll thought. Let me know. Thank you.
Nettie

Groveling

Uh...I want back in.

So, what do you guys think? Please vote. My feelings won't be hurt if you say "No Way Jose!"

But if it gives you any consolation, I promise not to get all Psycho-Mer on you again.

Please note that this was a very hard thing for me to ask to do. I feel quite embarrassed even thinking I could ask to be let back in.

From the Judge
About the Juices...
I took a good look at the labels on Naked smoothie juices. The ones that are thick have about 35 carbs and 20 something grams of sugar. And maybe 1 gram of fiber. V8 has 12 sugars and 15 carbs and 3 fiber. So, let's SCRATCH THE JUICES completely. No points for them. Make yourself a fresh smoothie and it will be more healthy and get you points. If you have already counted Naked or V8 as servings that is fine but from Thursday on they do not count.
The Judge has spoken. Thank you for listening. We Love you!!!

Fruits and Veggies We Love You

How is everyone doing with lots of fruits and veggies? I have discovered it is not as easy as I thought it would be to eat lots and lots of them. I did get to 7 one day but the other days were 4 and 5 servings. Not too great. BUT I am excited to do better and make them take the place of other foods and not just ADD them. This way it will be a real weight loss booster! And I need this if I am going to drop another 8 by cherise's wedding!! Good Luck Everyone!

Thanks!

Jason here . . . I just want to thank everybody for this great contest!

I have been exercising constantly and eating like Ghandi, and I haven't lost a single pound since November!

Even though I have no chance whatsoever of winning the competition, it has given me more motivation to continue trying to be healthy. Whoever came up with the idea of the weekly challenges -- THANKS! Having something different to focus on each week has really made it fun, and breaks up the monotony of dieting. I've just had so much fun.

Thank you so much to everybody who's participating, it makes it so much more fun to have more people involved. It's nice to see everybody trying to get healthy together.

I'm totally going to lose the contest, but I'm gonna lose with style!

This Week's Challenge

This week we are seeing who can have the most fruit and vegetable servings. So just so we're all on the same page, 1 serving = 1/2 cup or a "fist sized" portion.
Christine here, I need a bit of clarification. Juice doesn't count, right? And what did we decided about canned fruit?
Let's start a list, shall we?
1 serving=
1 banana
4 large strawberries
1 apple
1 orange
1/2 cup blueberries
10 baby carrots
1 stalk celery
2 kiwis
2 plums
1 tomato (2 roma, 6 cherry)
1 c. lettuce (firmly packed)
1/2 c. spinach
15 grapes
1/3 c. craisins **corrected** it this says on the bag
1/2 cucumber
feel free to add on . . . .
1/2 cup salsa
The Judge is here. It has been decided that the juices V8 and Naked will NOT be counted. Canned fruit only in fruit juice, not syrup.
(corrected)

Christine - 189.8 2.2 lb loss, total 4 lb loss 600 minutes of exercise More than 75,000 steps (there were 2 days I didn't have numbers for, because my pedometer reset itself. so I was going to average my days and add that BUT it turned out that with just 5 days I still had 75,000! I know, I rock.) Oh, And! Not only am I at my pre-cruise weight today but I am also officially NOT obese!! Woohoo! Only 25 lbs to go till I'm not overweight.

Annette - 122.2 .9 lb loss, Total 1.1 lb gain. 40 Min Excercise. 75,000 steps. I said a whole thing the first time I tried to puplish like 5 hours ago, but apparently it didn't think I was worthy of publishing, so nevermind.

Dad - 153. 82,000 steps 320 minutes exercise

Jason - 188.2 1.2 lb loss, total 8.2 lb gain 660 minutes of exercise 75,000 steps Meredith- I don't see how you can win this one if you didn't even wear a pedometer every day. It was a major pain for us too, but that was the whole point of the challenge.

Week 5 Weigh-In!!!

This past week's challenge was not eating chocolate. Post that in BROWN. Remember, we all could have won this challenge!!!!

Christine - 194.4 0.4 lb gain, total .6 gain 305 minutes of exercise NO CHOCOLATE!

Annette - 126.4

Jana-124 3 lb loss. Total 3 lb loss. 50 min. exercise. Don't ask me how this happened. It doesn't make sense, but I'll take it!! No Chocolate. Except on Sunday I ate a little bit of cookies 'n cream ice cream, not thinking...I didn't even remember till the next day! I had purposely bought strawberry icecream and was eating that, and Jeff had me trade a scoop of mine for a scoop of his. We don't really think of it as chocolate because it doesn't give him migraines. I'll let the officials decide if I lost the challenge because of that.

Dad - 150.5 5 lb loss how can that be??? 300 min exercise Ate Chocolate once.

Mom - 179!!! 2.5 lb loss and 7 total. 505 minutes of exercise! (Dad tricked me into 5.5 miles last night. It was dark when we got home!) Sorry folks, I ate chocolate. Started out accidental and then......

Jen -114 0 lb loss/gain. 180 min. exercise (has 2 strikes)

Jason - 188.8 0.4 gain, total 8 lb gain 230 minutes of exercise NO CHOCOLATE!

****Hey Everybody**** this is chris, I vote that Jana and Dad should still get challenge points since the chocolate they ate was totally on accident and in very small amounts. If you disagree, speak now or forever hold your peace.

**update, it's just Jana that deserves it, Dad ate more chocolate than we thought!**

Best Workout EVER!

Last night I did an exercise video that I used to do all the time, but haven't done in a few months now.
First of all I was awesome doing all of it-- I could totally do the whole thing with gusto, jumping jacks and all, and I even did a couple of push-ups on my toes! Never even attempted that before.
THEN I realized that at the jumping parts THE WHOLE HOUSE DIDN'T SHAKE!
AND my favorite of all: There's one part where you kneel on one knee and put your chest forward onto your leg to do some weights. Always before I've had to like move my tummy over to the side so I can go down like that. Well last night I DIDN'T! It's like I'm a normal person now or something!
It was so freaking awesome.
